How to Patch Test Skincare Products

A patch test is a simple way to gauge whether your skin will react negatively to a new skincare product. A skin reaction can be caused by a variety of substances, including, preservatives and perfuming ingredients.

Patch testing entails applying a small amount of the product to the skin and leaving it on for a short period of time to see if a reaction develops.

Dermatologists recommend patch testing a skin care product before incorporating it into your routine. Even though JNJ Botanicals’ products are generally mild, gentle and safe, we always recommend that you do a patch test before you incorporate any of our products into your routine. Here are the steps to take:

  • For seven to ten days, apply the product twice daily to a test spot. Choose a quarter-sized area of your skin that will not be rubbed or washed away by the product, such as the underside of your arm or the bend of your elbow. Use the same amount and thickness you would if you were applying the product on a regular basis.
  • Allow the product to sit on your skin for as long as you normally would. If you’re testing a wash-off product, such as a cleanser, leave it on your skin for as long as the instructions say and wash it off.
  • If you don’t have a skin reaction, such as red, itchy, or swollen skin, after seven to ten days, go ahead and use the product. If you have a skin reaction, wash it off gently as soon as possible and avoid using it again. If necessary, apply a cool compress or petroleum jelly to your skin. If your reaction to a product is severe and does not respond to cool compresses or petroleum jelly, you may need to consult a dermatologist to help manage your symptoms.
